Business plan made of post it notes

What Are Your Goals for 2020?

Click. The clock ticks over to midnight, the ball drops in Times Square, the music plays and the kisses are planted. Suddenly it’s a new year. Traditionally time to look back with thanks and gratitude, and forward with optimism and hope. Time to envision new horizons and set new goals for the year ahead.

But let’s forget about 2015 for now. That’s right – “Fuhgeddaboudit!” as they say in some of my favorite parts of New York City.

Let’s be really bold and look ahead five years out to 2020. Where do you want to be then? What do you want to be doing? Where is your home? What would your life look like if you allowed yourself to be truly and completely who you are intended to be?

In one of my favorite books Excuses Begone! author Wayne W. Dyer writes, “As Abraham Maslow once observed about self-actualizing people: They must be what they can be.

Here’s a five-minute exercise to get you started.

Step One. Imagine you wake up one morning and everything is perfect. What do you see, smell, hear and feel? Where are you? Who is with you? What do you look like? What are you planning to do that day? Allow yourself to put A white speedometer background with words representing steps to achieving success - Dream, Plan, Work, Make it Happen aside where you’re from and where you are right now. Release anything others may say you ‘should do’ and replace it with intentional thinking about what you ‘must do’. Push it all to the side for five short minutes and let your imagination see that day in early 2020 when all is now perfect.

Step Two. While it’s fresh in your thoughts, go write it down. Use bullet points and write as fast as you can. Remember, there are no limits. Have fun describing your desired changes just the way you see them on the horizon. Give no thought to limitations on how you’ll get there. Avoid the practical details for now. Just describe what you intend to accomplish in the next five years.

Of course, dreaming about five years from now includes the huge assumption that you will be here then – healthy, energized and living a fully charged life every day. That means you have to take good care of yourself every day between now and then to have any chance of success. All important goals are built on a platform of good health that allows us to pursue everything else. So take good care of yourself starting right now.

Five-year horizons provide opportunity for major changes in life. New careers, advanced education, relocation to a new and exciting environment, better relationships, measurable savings, and dramatically healthier lifestyles. Maybe even a beach condo in Hawaii!

Where do you want to be in five years? What do you want for your family and friends in 2020?

Now is the time to sketch out the shapes on your own five year horizon. You can fill in the details in the coming months. Stay tuned in 2015 for dozens of ideas on how to do exactly that.

better!

In Just One Word – Better!

My business performance coach posed a great question. “If you could describe in just a single word the overall purpose of your work, what would that word be?

Now I may not know all the answers, but I knew that one. The word is Better!

Everything I do in my work – in every keynote speech, every seminar and webinar, every business consulting project, and every one-on-one client coaching engagement. I have just one goal for my clients and for myself.

Better performance.

Better tomorrow than today; better next week than this week; better next year than this year. Simply – Better! Every day.

Better! performance is a goal that we can all work toward both on our own and in teams.

Better! gives us permission to acknowledge how well we perform today in any life or business skill area – from beginner to master. Each morning is its own starting point for action and the baseline against which we measure better!improvement by the end of that same day. Sustainable improvement regardless of where we are as each day begins.

The title of my first book “Do What You Can!” was taken from a great quote by former US President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, who advised, “Do what you can, with what you’ve got, where you are.”

I love this quote and the powerful ‘life performance’ instructions it lays out for us.

But I’m also quite fond of the subtitle to this book that a writing coach helped me craft: “Simple steps, extraordinary results – in business, in life!”.

That’s the benefit I want for you. Sustainable, simple steps achieving Better! results in your business and life goals, however you define them.

Simple steps. Every day. For your success.

Three Questions

  • What one action could you take today (and repeat every day) to advance your life towards what you feel is important? Consider how you could be a Better! parent, spouse, partner, neighbor, employee or manager. Just one action. Give it just one minute of concentrated thought. And then why not go and do it right now.
  • At your very next meal, what Better! choice of what you consume could you make to ensure your body gets the nourishment it needs to carry you through the day and get you ready for tomorrow? Why not make a conscious decision about what and how much to eat – with the goal of providing fuel rather than just tasty filler? Make that one choice the next time you eat. And then repeat each time you eat until your daily choice of Better! food for your body becomes an unconscious habit.
  • The concept of Simple Steps leading to Extraordinary Results starts with making consciously Better! decisions when everyday choices are presented to us. How fast we drive. Whether to turn off the TV and get the extra half hour of sleep we know we need. Whether to get out of the chair and take a 20-minute walk after our evening meal. When you finish reading this article, what’s the very next thing you have to do? How could you do that one thing even just a little bit Better!?

Now – go do it.
