In Just One Word – Better!

My business performance coach posed a great question. “If you could describe in just a single word the overall purpose of your work, what would that word be?”
Now I may not know all the answers, but I knew that one. The word is Better!
Everything I do in my work – in every keynote speech, every seminar and webinar, every business consulting project, and every one-on-one client coaching engagement. I have just one goal for my clients and for myself.
Better performance.
Better tomorrow than today; better next week than this week; better next year than this year. Simply – Better! Every day.
Better! performance is a goal that we can all work toward both on our own and in teams.
Better! gives us permission to acknowledge how well we perform today in any life or business skill area – from beginner to master. Each morning is its own starting point for action and the baseline against which we measure improvement by the end of that same day. Sustainable improvement regardless of where we are as each day begins.
The title of my first book “Do What You Can!” was taken from a great quote by former US President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, who advised, “Do what you can, with what you’ve got, where you are.”
I love this quote and the powerful ‘life performance’ instructions it lays out for us.
But I’m also quite fond of the subtitle to this book that a writing coach helped me craft: “Simple steps, extraordinary results – in business, in life!”.
That’s the benefit I want for you. Sustainable, simple steps achieving Better! results in your business and life goals, however you define them.
Simple steps. Every day. For your success.
Three Questions
- What one action could you take today (and repeat every day) to advance your life towards what you feel is important? Consider how you could be a Better! parent, spouse, partner, neighbor, employee or manager. Just one action. Give it just one minute of concentrated thought. And then why not go and do it right now.
- At your very next meal, what Better! choice of what you consume could you make to ensure your body gets the nourishment it needs to carry you through the day and get you ready for tomorrow? Why not make a conscious decision about what and how much to eat – with the goal of providing fuel rather than just tasty filler? Make that one choice the next time you eat. And then repeat each time you eat until your daily choice of Better! food for your body becomes an unconscious habit.
- The concept of Simple Steps leading to Extraordinary Results starts with making consciously Better! decisions when everyday choices are presented to us. How fast we drive. Whether to turn off the TV and get the extra half hour of sleep we know we need. Whether to get out of the chair and take a 20-minute walk after our evening meal. When you finish reading this article, what’s the very next thing you have to do? How could you do that one thing even just a little bit Better!?
Now – go do it.
